Aberargie Distillery, owned and operated by Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers, has announced plans to release its first single malt Scotch whisky in March 2026, signalling the Morrison family’s full return to whisky production for the first time in over two decades.
Situated just south of Perth, Aberargie was established in 2017 as part of the family’s long-term ambition to create a fully independent, grain-to-glass distillery. Built on the Morrison family’s 300-acre estate, it grows, distils, matures, and bottles its whisky entirely on-site, giving the spirit a clear sense of provenance and transparency rare in modern Scotch production.
Barley-to-Bottle Production in Perthshire
At the heart of Aberargie’s approach is its barley-to-bottle ethos. All barley used in production, including the classic Golden Promise variety is cultivated on the distillery’s own farmland, ensuring complete traceability from seed to spirit.
Earlier this autumn, the team marked a milestone with their final barley harvest before bottling, symbolising the close of an eight-year journey toward their first mature single malt. The whisky will draw upon spirit distilled and laid down between 2017 and 2018, aged entirely on the estate.
A Return to Family Whisky Heritage
For the Morrison family, the launch represents a return to craft whisky production after a break of more than 20 years. The family’s heritage stretches back generations, once owners of Bowmore, Auchentoshan, and Glen Garioch, the Morrisons sold those assets in the 1990s before focusing on independent bottling under labels such as Carn Mòr and Mac-Talla.
Aberargie marks the next chapter: a distillery designed to embody the family’s values of patience, quality and self-sufficiency.
“This is a distillery built on Scottish soil, with Scottish grain, and with the same sense of pride that’s driven the Morrison name for decades,”
said David Henderson, distillery manager.
What to Expect from the First Release
While full details remain under wraps, early insights suggest Aberargie’s first bottling will emphasise a robust, fruity Lowland character. The spirit has been crafted with long ageing potential in mind, rich, malty and textured, showcasing the natural sweetness of Perthshire barley.
The inaugural single malt will be bottled on site and is expected to be available through selected independent retailers across the UK.
A Modern Distillery with Traditional Values
The release of Aberargie’s first whisky will be one of the most significant new Scotch launches of 2026. It combines the tradition and experience of one of Scotland’s oldest whisky families with the sustainability and transparency of modern distilling.
For whisky enthusiasts, Aberargie represents both continuity and innovation, a reminder that Scotch whisky’s next generation is being shaped not by conglomerates, but by families who still work the land themselves.
