Bruichladdich has announced the release of X4+18 Edition 01, an 18 year old single malt created through an uncommon four stage distillation, making it one of the most distinctive Islay bottlings in recent memory.
The distillery first experimented with X4 spirit in the early 2000s, influenced by historical references to ultra pure “XX whisky”. The new release represents the culmination of that long-running project, with the spirit spending 18 years in oak before bottling at natural colour and natural strength.
Bruichladdich’s master blender, Adam Hannett, highlighted the significance of the project, saying:
“Bruichladdich has never been afraid to push boundaries. X4+18 Edition 01 is the culmination of a daring experiment, 18 years of patience, and the perseverance of our Islay home. It shows that innovation can go hand-in-hand with elegance, excitement, and truly exceptional flavour.”

The X4+18 Edition 01 is priced at £225 and is now available through Bruichladdich’s UK website, with dispatch beginning on 26 November. Interest is expected to be high given the unconventional production and very limited stocks.
This release adds another chapter to Bruichladdich’s history of experimentation, combining heritage, risk taking, and long term maturation in a way few distilleries attempt.
